Briefly about business coaching

It is a common mistake to think of executive coaching, leadership coaching and business coaching as a specific branch of coaching that is different from "regular" coaching. There is really no difference at all. Coaches use business coaching or executive coaching rather than the word "coaching" to more effectively influence the type of clients they hope to attract. They want to distinguish their coaching from the coaching of others. Coach training programs do the same thing. All these titles and definitions are more about marketing than any real difference in coaching.

Here is the simple explanation of why this is so.
A business leader is more likely to be attracted to a coach who calls himself an executive or business coach and who offers executive or leadership coaching, especially when he needs to get the board to approve the cost of hiring a business coach. An entrepreneur, on the other hand, may be more attracted to business coaching because that is where they identify their need. Someone looking for a coach to help them achieve life balance or something else personal will thus probably seek out a coach for this rather than a business coach.

Since coaching is an unregulated field, you can call yourself any kind of coach you want. The important thing to keep in mind when looking for a coach is that the person has proper coaching training. The fact that someone has 20 years of experience in marketing, management or a civil engineering background does not matter in a coaching conversation. In some cases, it can even be a warning signal where they take on the role of an advisor who shares their experience, views and opinions on how you as a client should act and handle situations.

Certifications
There are many different trainings and certifications - one of the largest available today is issued by the International Coach Federation (ICF), which is an organization that ensures that the coaching performed by the coach is of a certain standard. All coaching has the same foundation and is defined by its practices and outcomes. Coaching is a series of intentional conversations that empower a person or group to live out themselves. The ICF, which is the world's largest coaching organization, has 11 core competencies that all professional coaches will practice, whether they call themselves an executive coach, coach or life coach.

Tommy has no less than 3 different certifications and thousands of hours of experience in coaching individuals and teams to both perform and feel at their best. In addition to his PCC certification, he is also a Certified Co-Active coach. Co-Active coaching is one of the world's leading and most comprehensive coaching training programs. When Tommy works with teams, a different type of coaching is done. It is something called system coaching and is very different from group coaching. Tommy is a certified Team Performance coach and uses the Team Coaching International (TCI) method for this. TCI has developed some of the most successful methods to help teams increase their performance by working on the 14 factors that influence productivity and positivity. What defines a coach?

  • Coaches don't talk, they listen.
  • They do not give information, they ask questions.
  • They do not give ideas, they generate ideas from the client.
  • They do not share their story, they draw from the client's experience.
  • They do not present solutions, they expand the client's thinking.
  • They don't give advice, they empower the client to make their own choices.

Business coaching gives a professional tone to the company

The pressure to continuously deliver results means that leaders tend to ignore things that are not perceived as important. Since managers are great performers, they have come a long way thanks to their abilities, but hit the ceiling of their abilities the higher up in the organization they manage to get. In these positions, more than just strengths need to be developed to avoid serious consequences. Leadership mistakes can cost millions and jobs.

Executive coaching can be very challenging in terms of time and energy. The higher up a leader goes in a company, the less time and patience they have for slow processes. For a collaboration between coach and manager to work optimally, clarity, openness and straightforward communication on all aspects of the coaching topic, goals and process are required.

Below are some of the most common topics that leaders choose to be coached on:

  • Self-awareness.
  • Interpersonal relationships, listening and empathy.
  • Influence.
  • Leadership in times of change.
  • Communication skills.
  • Motivation and commitment, leading with vision and purpose.
  • Building effective teams.
  • Strategy and strategic thinking.
  • Managing uncertainty and ambiguity; decision-making skills.
  • Mentoring, developing internal talent, learning.
